Witches, Sister Midwives, and the true calling.
Midwives are unique. If you walked in their shoes you would understand why this sentence is accurate.
We aren't weird moon dancing, herb mixing, incense burners... well maybe we are but only because our history shows lots of these herbs, rituals, and instincts work. Midwives are unique because the calling doesn't come too often or to too many. We are unique because many times what we do doesn't seem to make sense to outsiders which is why our instincts are important. This is why joining in red tents, sharing herbs and birth stories, supporting each other and our families are such an important connection with what we do. Whispering to the transitioning baby, using herbs, burning sage, dancing with moms in the moonlight is why many say we are witches and we work with "magic".
You can't understand it because you haven't been called to do it. The path hasn't unfolded for you to see because it's not meant for you to see. We all have paths and purposes here and the Midwives are one that is mystical, beautiful, and one that works and has worked for many many years.
"Witches, Midwives and Nurses" was a required book when I was becoming a Midwife. I was taught by a great Granny Midwife, her skills were outstanding and her instincts, on point. She made sure her students understood where we came from, the struggles those before us had to endure so we could be where we are today. If you have a chance you should read the book:
I spoke to an OB recently, he has seen the skill used by the Midwives. He saw how instincts, trust in the old knowledge and the woman's true ability helped saved so many and he acknowledged it. It's something lacking today in medical schools and it's something that should be honored and nourished.
Midwives play many roles: Healers, Doctors, Nurses, Pediatricians, Mothers, Sisters, Daughters, Wives. We do this for little pay, we do this for long hours, no sleep, verbal abuse from medical professionals, missing events of our own, and we do this for women having choices, women trusting their bodies to know what to do, babies allowed to enter this world in the best way, families and quiet unseen rewards. We do this because we are called to do this.
